Three parts of PTE Academic Exam

Part 1: Speaking & Writing

Duration: 29-30 Minutes | 7 Question Types

In this section, your English speaking and writing skills will be thoroughly tested through a variety of question types. You’ll be required to provide answers ranging from short responses to detailed essays. The 7 question types you’ll face include:

  • Personal Introduction (not scored, but sent to institutions)

  • Repeat Sentence — Listen and repeat sentences accurately.

  • Answer Short Question — Respond to brief questions with short answers.

  • Read Aloud — Read a text aloud clearly and fluently.

  • Describe Image — Provide a spoken description of an image.

  • Summarize Written Text — Write a concise summary of a passage.

  • Re-tell Lecture — Listen to a lecture and retell the key points.

  • Essay — Write a detailed essay on a given topic.

Part 2: Reading

Duration: 29–30 Minutes | 5 Question Types

The Reading section of the PTE Academic test evaluates your ability to comprehend academic English texts. One of the question types also tests your writing skills through sentence completion tasks. You’ll encounter a variety of formats that challenge your grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension abilities.

You will be tested on the following 5 question types:

  • Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks — Complete sentences using appropriate words.

  • Fill in the Blanks — Drag and drop correct words into the gaps within a passage.

  • Multiple Choice, Single Answer — Choose one correct answer based on a reading passage.

  • Re-order Paragraphs — Organize shuffled text boxes to form a coherent paragraph.

  • Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer — Select more than one correct option from a list.

Part 3: Listening

Duration: 30–43 Minutes | 8 Question Types

This part includes audio and video-based questions that test your listening, reading, and writing skills. You can take notes while the audio plays, which helps in answering the questions more effectively.

The 8 question types you’ll face in this section include:

  • Summarize Spoken Text — Listen to a recording and write a summary.

  • Highlight Correct Summary — Choose the correct summary that matches the audio.

  • Highlight Incorrect Words — Spot discrepancies between the transcript and the audio.

  • Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers — Select all correct responses based on what you hear.

  • Multiple Choice, Single Answer — Choose one correct answer after listening.

  • Write from Dictation — Type a sentence exactly as you hear it.

  • Fill in the Blanks — Fill missing words in a transcript while listening.

  • Select Missing Word — Identify the missing word at the end of an audio clip.
